Festive Birthday!

For this month's pinterest boards we picked 'festive' as our theme. These are my festive boards, celebrating my favourite part of the season, MY BIRTHDAY!!

I am a Christmas baby, so the holiday season has an extra layer of festive fun for me! For my December pinterest board I focused on the things that make a holiday birthday special: sparkly, fun party outfits, decorations that shimmer and shine, and dancing your butt off with your nearest and dearest!

The Warrior

-->
I like to think of myself as a little bit of a fighter. I like to wrestle to get what I want, in art and in life. I work harder if I know the answer will not come easily and in my own mind that transforms me into a warrior. I like a measure of fairness in this fight of course, but I also like to win. I like to succeed in my charge and take pride in my efforts. As any other armour (or suit jacket) wearing woman would. I feel that there are moments on our journey where we emerge from the deep dark and transform into our true selves, our warrior. In this persona we are most fearless and truly wonderful as we understand a little more every day what we are fighting for.

The Mystic

Since I was little I've had a strong sixth sense; this ability to perceive the subtle dimensions of the unseen world. This would be true to my creative process and what I want to capture in my work. It's about trying to grasp the inner nature of things through keen intuition.

The Romantic

This month, we’ve each picked a persona to base our pinterest boards on. The personas we have chosen are facets of who we are and recurring spectres in our work. The other ladies will be putting together posts about their choices but for now here’s my board for The Romantic.

I'm a romantic; a sentimental person thinks things will last, a romantic person hopes against hope that they won't.
F. Scott Fitzgerald

From the raindrops of Chopin to Pushkin’s snow-covered birch groves, I am a hopeless romantic.  I am nostalgic and dramatic, a wistful dreamer. The fragility and beauty of human experience influences my work in many ways; being an artist is a romantic process: it’s trusting your intuition, living in the moment, and jumping in with both feet.

Metamorphosis

'Change alone is eternal, perpetual, and immortal.'
Arthur Schopenhauer

For Come Up to My Room, my work focuses on metamorphosis.

Life is made up of phases both beautiful and challenging. We desire the stability of stasis, but we flourish with change; it forces us to pause, analyze, and quantify our experiences.

At times, we must build a cocoon with our history, creating a space to take a sometimes difficult look at our lives, mourning the things we will leave behind, and to accept others and ourselves for the fragile, imperfect beings we are. Even the most positive transformations stressfully force us out of our comfort zone; we have to rebuild our confidence in new surroundings and regain our bearings.

Through this process, we become our truer selves.

Dreamer

For Woman King’s installation at the upcoming 10th Anniversary Come up to my Room event, I’m focusing on the dreamer.

“Our life is composed greatly from dreams, from the unconscious, and they must be brought into connection with action. They must be woven together.” Anais Nin

As an avid day-dreamer myself, it was high time that I explore dreams, day-dreaming and the dreamer more in depth.

Seat of all Wisdom

“the mind… flutters here and there like a bird. Only in the depth of the still heart can the liberating truth be found. For the heart is the seat of the Divine, the connecting point between the finite and the infinite.” – Georg Feuerstein, The Path of Yoga

I’m making the heart (both literal and figurative) a focus of much of the work I am creating for Woman King’s upcoming installation as part of the upcoming 10th anniversary of Come Up To My Room at the Gladstone in January 2013. Visit the Gladstone’s blog post where we are featured! And stay tuned for more updates on the evolution of our projects for this huge event!
